Benefits of Trees
Trees are good

Did you know that shade trees can cool a building by up to 20 degrees in the summer? Or, that one tree can produce nearly 260 pounds of oxygen each year? These are just two of the many benefits of trees.

Trees matter, not just for their beauty, but for their benefits to environment, the community and your family’s bottom line.

Here are some ways trees are good:

  • T
rees keep our air supply fresh by absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen.

  • T
rees help moderate our climate. Temperature near trees is cooler than in areas without trees. The larger the tree, the greater the cooling.

  • Trees intercept rain water, store some of it and reduce the impact of storm runoff and the possibility of flooding.

  •
Deciduous trees, particularly when planted on the south side of a home, provide valuable shade in the summer and allow for radiant heat from the sun in the winter.

Why we love trees

Trees also provide many social and community benefits. Many of us feel serene in the presence of trees. They make life more pleasant. We plant them as living memorials because they have potential for long life. We often feel emotionally attached to trees, especially the ones we, or someone we love, have planted.

Trees can serve architectural and engineering functions. They can emphasize views, provide pedestrian direction, create privacy and screen out objectionable views. Placed well, they enhance, complement or soften architectural features.

“Trees are a wise investment, because landscaped homes have more value than homes without landscapes,” says Daryl Hennessy, president of Hennessy Landscaping. “Trees placed well in the landscape also can save homeowners in energy costs from reduced heating and cooling.”
