Fall for the Flowers
Autumn's a great time to plant perennials

If you missed the spring planting season, there's still time after Labor Day to create a fabulous perennial border or garden in your landscape.

In fact, fall is the perfect time to plant perennials in central Ohio.

September and October offer gardeners a chance to create next year’s color show while also enjoying some late bloomers now. Some of the advantages of fall planting include:

This perennial border says "fall."

• Plenty of time for roots to become established before onset of winter

•
An ideal climate of warm days, cool nights – for both you and your new plants

• Sales on perennials at garden supply stores

• Opportunities to divide mature perennials already in your garden or from plants you buy.

Mixing perennials creates a year-long display.

If you like late bloomers, this is the time to find them. It was easy to overlook asters, coneflower and black-eyed susans in the spring when they weren’t the stars in the sales displays - or even in stock. Now, they’re easy to find at the garden stores, and often on sale.

And of course, there’s no end of the variety and quantity of chrysanthemums you’ll find this fall. The hardy mums you plant in beds this fall can return year after year.

Golden hakone grass stands out all year.

Don’t forget foliage plants

One of our favorite perennials is golden hakone grass, the 2009 Perennial of the Year.

Golden hakone grass is a great example of a perennial that shines without showy flowers. It makes a fantastic companion to hostas and other stars of the shade and evening gardens. It shimmers in the breeze. In the autumn, the bright green leaves turn to shades of pink and red.

Another favorite of ours is Baptisia australis, the 2010 Perennial of the Year.

“Perennials add color and interest to the landscape, and there’s no better time to do a garden makeover than the fall,” says Daryl Hennessy, president of Hennessy Landscaping.

“This is a relatively easy do-it-yourself project that many homeowners find rewarding. If you’d rather not dig in the dirt or miss an Ohio State football game, give us a call. We’ll help you get the look you want, so you can sit back and just enjoy.”
