Give your pond TLC this fall Your water feature is the calm center of your landscape, providing relaxation and enjoyment in your outdoor living space. Make sure you keep it happy by maintaining it this fall. Check the water level at least once per week. The ideal level is about one inch below the skimmer box hole. This water level allows the skimmer box to accept larger debris in the net for disposal. Expect to lose some water from waterfall splash. However, if you lose three to four inches of water in a 24-hour period for three consecutive days, you have a leak.
A little maintenance this fall can ensure a happy pond next year.
Check the skimmer once a week. Empty the net of large debris. Remove the filter mats and clean them off with a hose.
Clean your waterfall box. Use a hose to spray and clean filter mats and lava rock. Store the filter mats and lava rock in the waterfall box. Around Thanksgiving, remove the pump, filter mats and net. Store them in a dry place until next spring. Or, install a pond warmer so you always have a hole in the ice to help keep your fish alive and prevent future leaks.
