Like the other seasons, winter brings its own form of beauty. Think berries, tree bark, grasses and more.
A winter landscape requires a little ingenuity and planning. With fewer plant elements for making a visual statement, you may need to spend some time researching your options.
All year, evergreens serve as a backbone or structure in the landscape. These include the narrow-leaf pines, spruces, yew shrubs and broad-leaf evergreens such as holly and ivy.
Evergreen shrubs such as boxwood, cotoneaster and yucca also provide options for winter interest.
Evergreens provide year-round interest.
Consider combining evergreens with ornamental grasses for color and variety. The grasses provide four-season interest and can be radiant on a winter day with their movement and color.
Deciduous trees with interesting bark patterns or color are beautiful in the winter. Try combining them with an evergreen plant. For example, Red Twig Dogwood and the evergreen groundcover Liriope complement each other nicely.
Birch trees grow various shades of white bark, making them interesting in the winter landscape. Some trees, such as the winged euonymus, reveal an interesting bark texture in the winter.
