Green is in. In fact, a recent Gallup poll shows that 83 percent of Americans have taken at least a minor step toward going green within the past year.
Your landscape already has a positive environmental impact. You can make it even more eco-friendly by harvesting rain, recycling old brick pavers and choosing drought-tolerant, native plants.
Consider rain barrels. Typically, they catch rain through roof downspouts that divert water to an industrial-sized barrel rather than sending it to the storm water sewer system – or to your water-logged landscape. Later, when conditions are dry, draw on the captured rain water to soak your thirsty plants – and save money on your water bill.
We can reset old brick into a beautiful new pathway.
Another way to go green in the landscape is resetting brick in old paver paths. In many cases, it’s possible to trim the old brick and reset it in a new pathway – in the same location or elsewhere in the landscape. This saves you money and recycles material that would otherwise go to a landfill.
Many plants and trees can help you reduce your utility bills. In a few years, a well chosen and placed tree will reduce cooling costs and maybe heating costs. You also can select perennials that can tolerate hot dry summers. Native plants are good choices for a green landscape.
Finally, consider your lawn. If it’s small enough, why not buy a reel mower? You’ll reduce noise and air pollution, save money on fuel and maintenance and get a minor workout. The grass clippings become natural fertilizer. It’s also a good way to strike up conversations with your neighbors.
