Winter’s coming, and that means it’s time to get your water feature ready for the cold.
Around Thanksgiving, you'll need to take these steps: • Take the pump out of the water. • Store the pump in a bucket of water so the pump parts do not dry out and become brittle.
• Place the bucket in a spot where the water won’t freeze. Also remove the filter mats and net and store them in a dry place.
A little maintenance now will ensure a happy pond next year.
No need to remove the water. When the rains come, the overflow will take care of excess water.
Winter prep is easier if you decide to purchase a pond warmer, available at any nursery center. A plugged-in pond warmer will create a hole in the ice and help keep your fish alive. It also will help prevent future leaks. With a pond warmer, you don't need to remove and store the pump, filter mats and net. Put “winterize your pond” on your calendar shortly before or after Thanksgiving. A few minutes of maintenance now will pay off with a happy, well functioning water feature next year.
