It’s often possible to reset old brick from a pathway to create a new smooth path – without sending the old brick to the landfill. Here are some tips on repairing your paver pathway:
• Remove the existing paver patio and set aside for reuse.
• Remove existing mason sand and tamp existing base material.
• Add leveling gravel and reset the pavers in the same configuration as the existing patio.
• Reset existing plastic edging and metal spikes to retain pavers.
• Fill joints with polymeric sand to minimize weed growth and ongoing maintenance.
The hardest part of resetting old brick may be applying the polymeric sand, which helps control weeds.
While it’s not essential to use the same configuration as the existing patio, the colors and overall look of the pavers will blend better.
Homeowners will want to think carefully about using polymeric sand, as it’s trickier to apply than play sand, says Daryl Hennessy, president of Hennessy Landscaping.
“Polymeric sand uses a water-activated compound to bind the sand particles,” Hennessy said. “You’ll want to pick a dry period to do your installation, turn off the garden hose and ensure no water enters the site before your project is completed, including the final cleanup of all polymeric sand residue. Otherwise, you’ll have that sand dust forever.”
