The do-it-yourself show on TV made it seem easy to install the patio of your dreams. Are you up to the challenge? In fact, the job of installing a patio, path or water feature is often more complicated than the TV shows or the do-it-yourself books let on. The result could be more frustration than satisfaction if you're not careful in deciding what you can do on your own.
Here’s what to consider before starting your central Ohio landscape project:
Installing a paver patio requires skill and hard, physical work. Are you up to the challenge?
Time. Are you willing to sacrifice time with family and friends to complete your project? Maybe you can recruit them for help, especially if they have relevant skills – or at least some brawn. Skill level. If you’re already proficient with tools and the type of project you’re planning, then you’re ahead of the average homeowner starting a DIYS project. Tools. If you don’t have what it takes to do the project, you’ll have to buy, rent or borrow the tools and equipment. Patience. The first roadblock will test your commitment. Count on at least one unexpected factor, especially if this is your first time for this kind of project. Money. Yes, you’ll likely save money by doing it yourself, but will your project stand the test of time? It might and might not, depending on your skill level and commitment to learning what it takes to doing it right and well. Muscles. Not all of us are up to moving boulders, hauling brick, bending over, lifting and working in the sun for long hours. And even if you are, you might have a better idea for a physical challenge. Fun. For some people, yard work and home projects are relaxing and rewarding – even an antidote to a week spent sitting in front of a computer. For others, home projects are drudgery. It’s important to ask yourself how you’ll view this project at the mid-point. “There’s no question that many people get enormous satisfaction from completing a home improvement project," says Daryl Hennessy, president of Hennessy Landscaping. “You’ll want to call a professional landscaping company when you know the job is beyond your skill level, time or patience. That leaves you free to do other things so you can enjoy the project when it’s done.”
