When to Landscape Your New Home Just bought a house? You might want to wait a year before choosing a new landscape. The reason: most people need at least a year to observe sun and shade patterns, the behavior of current plantings and how family members and visitors use the house and outdoor areas.
"That kind of knowledge goes a long way toward creating an outcome you'll enjoy for years to come," says Daryl Hennessy, president of Hennessy Landscaping.
"A great design comes from knowing the unique qualities of the landscape and the needs of the people using it."
Each landscape has unique possibilities.
Here are some questions to ask yourself as you plan your home’s landscaping:
• What parts of the landscape get full sun? Deep shade? Drainage problems? Too little water?
• Which plant materials are healthy? Not so healthy?
• Do pathways go where I want to walk or do I walk in areas that don’t have a path?
• Is there enough light to guide the way to doors and vehicles? Are there dark corners on the property?
• Can I see my favorite landscaping features at night?
• What do I enjoy doing outdoors at home? How well does my landscape support these activities?
In addition, you might want to consider: • Asking your neighbors about their landscape successes – and hardships.
• Buying tickets to a local home and garden tour in central Ohio. It’s a great way to get ideas – and to support community groups.
• Reading magazines and books that feature landscape designs for homes like yours. “We find that many of our customers know exactly what they want, because they’ve been thinking about it for a long time,” Hennessy said. “They can’t wait to enjoy the plan they’ve envisioned. We encourage people to take the time they need to make the right decision.”
